Course description:

Reading instruction involves a two-pronged approach. Students must be taught how to read as well as learn how to use reading skills and strategies to learn and meet the different demands of specific content areas. These are often summarized as “Learning to Read” and “Reading to Learn.”
This course involves both elements of an effective reading program. We will explore the researched-based elements of effective reading instruction along with how coaching assists teachers’ efforts in helping students learn to read and read to learn.
Additionally, the purpose of this course is to grow collaboration between partners or collaborative inquiry teams who work together to improve student reading skills through improving their teaching and assessment practices. The focus for the team is to give time and attention to those skills necessary to teach reading well through effective coaching practices. Whether in sports, business, or education, the purpose of coaching is to draw upon an individual’s talents, skills, and abilities to move them to intentional best practice. (Intentional best practice refers to instructional decisions and actions that the teacher purposefully makes in the lesson planning and delivery that are supported by research and contribute to student achievement.)
